Summary of
Professional Experience

Dr. Sherrill's professional experiences are divided between mathematics education and administration. He is currently the Associate Dean, School of Education, University of Houston - Clear Lake(UHCL). He has served as a senior "school" level administrator at UHCL and, before that, at the University of British Columbia(UBC) for a total of 27 years. With respect to mathematics education, Dr. Sherrill was involved in every provincial mathematics assessment and curriculum revision during the 29 years he was at UBC. He was also involved in both the Second International Mathematics Study and the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. He was the chair of the Commission on the Education of Teachers of Mathematics (of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) at the time the Commission persuaded NCATE to allow the NCTM to determine the NCATE standards for mathematics education.

Projects and Grants

Dr. Sherrill's main research interest is in the area of mathematical problem solving.

Teaching Areas

Dr. Sherrill teaches the elementary mathematics methods course (TCED 4233).

Publications and Presentations

Dr. Sherrill has over 100 publications and 400 presentations.

Service Activities

While at UBC Dr. Sherrill was very actively involved with the mathematics teachers of the province, including serving on the Executive of the B. C. Association of Mathematics Teachers for 11 years and serving as chair or program chair for 23 mathematics conferences. Dr. Sherrill was honored by being awarded the very first Life Time Membership in the BCAMT.
