The UH-Clear Lake Faculty Fellowship recently announced the university faculty fellowship 2002-2003 recipients.

The recipients are Judith Marquez, associate professor of bilingual and multicultural education; Michael Mezzino, professor of mathematics; Ronald Mills, professor of biology and chemistry; and Kwok-Bun Yue, associate professor of computer science and information systems.

"I was honored to be nominated and even more honored to be one of the recipients," Mills said.

The four university faculty fellowship recipients received a one-year $5,000 stipend that can be used for educational materials, seminars, workshops, traveling to conferences and related items.

"I will be using some of the money to travel to professional conferences to present my research," Marquez said. "Another portion of the funds will be utilized to hire someone to transcribe and enter some of the data that I have collected in the last year or so."

The purpose of the university faculty fellowship award is to recognize the significant and continuing contributions that faculty members make in the areas of teaching, research, scholarly activities and to the added success of the university. The university faculty fellowship first presented the award in 2001.

"The faculty who have been awarded the university faculty fellowships the past two years have not only excelled in contributions through their teaching, research and service activities, but have also earned the respect of their peers who have nominated them," said William A. Staples, university president.

Full-time tenured faculty members at UH-Clear Lake are eligible for nomination. Academic administrators and full-time faculty at the university level can place nominations.

Nominations are made to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Edward J. Hayes. Hayes appoints a faculty advisory board that consists of a faculty member from each school to assist the chief academic officer in determining the annual recipients.

"The committee provides advice and counsel to the chief academic officer relative to whom should be selected from the pool of nominations," Hayes said. "It is an excellent process which is objective and generally arrives at selecting the best candidates."

Mezzino and Yue could not be reached for comment on their accomplishments.

The deadline for nominations to the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost is March 29.
