The University of Houston-Clear Lake's sixth annual Leadership Conference will take place Nov. 1-2 in the Bayou Building. Registration fee is $40 for the weekend.

"As far as price and locality, it doesn't get much better than having it here on our campus," said David Rachita, assistant dean of student life.

Susanne Gaddis, "The Communications Doctor," will open the event as the keynote speaker Friday night. Students from all over the state will be attending the conference.

"Students have a chance to get involved in a really relaxed atmosphere with some of our student leaders and students from other college campuses," said Sue Fellman, coordinator of student life.

Following dinner on Friday night will be a carnival. The entertainment will include karaoke, a caricature artist and a make-your-own sundae bar. Organizations on campus will have booths set up providing an array of games and entertainment.

Saturday will include breakfast, lunch, a closing reception with refreshments and door prizes, and four interest sessions. Participants will choose four of 16 topics offered in the sessions.

One of the interest sessions offered is "The Fine Art of Networking," which focuses on the importance of the networking process that involves interacting effectively with people, fine-tuning communication skills, and keeping a positive attitude and self-image. In "Leadership on the Loose with Dr. Seuss," individuals will read Dr. Seuss books and identify and explain leadership qualities in these books, either good or bad. "Diversities of Transgenderism," is a group discussion on transgender issues. "The 'F' Word: Teaching Facilitation Skills in 7 Easy Steps," focuses on how to give a presentation or lead a group discussion.

"This conference is an excellent opportunity for students to collect information regarding leadership theories and practices," Rachita said.

Those interested can register for this event in the Student Life Office. Tell them you read this article in the UHCLIDIAN and get $10 off the $40 registration fee.
