University of Houston-Clear Lake offers psychological services for students and members of the community.

The services focus on individuals with problems like depression, stress and anxiety, counseling for couples with poor communication, families and their relationships, and children with behavioral, emotional and learning difficulties.

The clinic provides testing for children up to the age of 18 for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, behavior problems and learning disabilities.

These services are available at a low cost. The fee is based on income and is negotiable. Late-afternoon appointments are available.

"If students need personal counseling, Career Placement and Counseling Services is the primary place to go on campus because it is free to current students," said Ray Pledger, director of Psychological Services. "Our clinic offers individual counseling for persons who are not current UHCL students. We also provide couple counseling, family therapy and assessment for educational and emotional problems of children and adolescents, which are available to everyone including students at the university."

Students can also recommend the facility to their family and friends.

The clinic is facilitated by advanced graduate psychology students and is supervised by licensed clinical faculty.

Because it is a training environment, the counselors use the latest counseling techniques in their sessions.

"Psychological Services is a highly valuable service, both in the context of offering UHCL graduate students a training facility in which to gain needed experience and in terms of providing affordable quality counseling services to members of the Clear Lake community," said Cynthia Cook, assistant director for Career and Counseling Services.

The Psychological Services office is located in the Arbor Building, Room 190.
