The university Math Center offers tutoring, test preparation and math workshops to all currently enrolled students.

The Math Center allows students to come by during center hours and get immediate assistance. Students can get help with homework problems, test problems and test anxiety.

Students can also take advantage of the weekly study sessions that are provided in an open forum or look at the bank of study questions for more test preparation.

"The Math Center is very important because it shows students that we care about their success," said Tom Fox, Math Center director. "We have many elementary education students who are enrolled in the Math 3032 course who regularly use the Math Center. Our teaching assistants are enrolled in Math 3032 and have an understanding of the teacher's styles and the grading policies, which better accommodates our students."

The Math Center also has a bank of reference books that have detailed lesson plans to help elementary education students prepare for the Math Methods course. Test anxiety workshops are available on video.

"This is my second time to take Math 3032 and I have gotten a lot of help from the Math Center," said Martha Cabral, bilingual education major. "I got a B on my first test and I owe that to the Math Center."

"In the Math Center we try to help students think instead of memorize," Fox said. "The Math Center reflects the school's commitment to meeting student's needs."

The Math Center has been open approximately five years. Funding is provided by the dean of the school of science and computer engineering.

Appointments are not necessary; students can come in during center hours and spend as much time as they need. This way, students can get help as soon as possible instead of having to schedule a time to meet with their teacher.

"I have been working in the Math Center for the last three semesters and I really enjoy the students," said Subramaniam Nandigrama, teaching assistant in the Math Center. "Everyone is very friendly and you not only help these students, but they become your friends."

"The teaching assistants really hold the Math Center together," Fox said. "Without the teaching assistants we would be nothing."

The Math Center is located in Bayou Building, Room 2102. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Math Center is closed on weekends and holidays.

Walk-ins are available during working hours. Visits usually last an average of 75 minutes.
