Business majors head abroad

Students in the School of Business and Public Administra-tion have an opportunity to travel, work for an international company and gain experience in international business this summer.

For the past 12 years, UH-Clear Lake and National Sun Yat-Sen University, located in Taiwan, have had an agreement that allows current students from both schools to study abroad.

The program is set up for business students to gain six internship credit hours by working at an international company.

"I require that the company we work with actually puts us on a project they are working on," said Lou White, professor of business.

The internship requires the students to live in Taiwan for six weeks in the summer. While there, they live in dorms, work at the designated company and occasionally sightsee in other countries.

"The incentive for a student to go is simple," White said. "It helps them get great jobs. Comp-anies today are looking for people with international experience. This program is a great way to get it."

UH-Clear Lake students are required to pay six hours worth of tuition for the internship, but the university pays for airfare and housing.

This summer, the students chosen will be working with a multi-national food processing company and will assist the company in increasing its market. Past groups have worked with hospitals, government agencies and many other venues.

While UH-Clear Lake students participate in the international internship, Taiwanese students come to UH-Clear Lake to study. The program does not require the exchange students to pay tuition to UH-Clear Lake but, because there is no on-campus housing at UH-Clear Lake, the exchange students must pay for housing.

"Studying abroad is required for them, so this program helps both parties," White said.

While internships are not required for UH-Clear Lake business students, the experience is invaluable, White said.

Information for next year's internship opportunity will be posted during the summer. Applicants for this year's program will be notified before the end of the year about their acceptance status for the internship.
