Student publication wins national
award UH-Clear Lake student publications brought home six national awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Awards Convocation in New York City, March 16, and 14 state awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Conference in Fort Worth, March 28-30. Bayousphere, the university's literary-art magazine, won the prestigious Silver Crown Award from Columbia Scholastic Press Association for its 2001 edition. Bayousphere competed against 155 magazines published during the 2000-2001 academic year. "The award indicates your publication ranks among the best in student journalism," said Edmund J. Sullivan, the association's director. The Silver Crown Award was presented to student publications adviser Dr. Ashley Packard in the Roosevelt Hotel at the College Media Convention in midtown Manhattan. "Bayousphere is one of the university's gems, and we wouldn't have it without Dr. John Gorman who founded the publication and still inspires the staff every year," Packard said. Gorman, a professor of literature, still acts as the magazine's creative consultant. Columbia Scholastic Press Association also awarded Bayousphere 2001 several Gold Circle Awards. Gold Circle Awards recognize outstanding student writers, editors, designers and photographers around the country. The Gold Circle is the largest national competition for individual achievement in college and university publications throughout the United States. Samina Mahmood and Brian Catalina won second place awards in overall design, black and white cover design and typography. Mahmood and Catalina also were awarded honorable mention in the category of spread design. Lynne Barends won second place for black and white photography. CSPA is an international student press association with 1,479 members, headquartered at Columbia University in New York. Both Bayousphere 2001 and the UHCLIDIAN brought home awards from the Texas Interc-ollegiate Press Association Conference. Bayousphere 2001 won eight awards in the state competition. Lynne Barends won first place for action photography, and Rena Lidstone won first place for feature photography. Judith Betlow received first place in the essay category. Mahmood and Catalina won a second place award for cover design and a third place award for story package. Honorable mention awards were given to Jerry Underwood for poetry and Elias Martinez for illustration. The staff won honorable mention in the category of overall literary magazine. The UHCLIDIAN earned six awards at the conference. Lindsey Moore won first place for design of a single advertisement. Jennifer Glass won third place for illustration. Kalan Lyra won honorable mention for news cartoon, and Susie Thompson won honorable mention for a sports feature. Wade Webster, Wendy Ogle and Susie Thompson received honorable mention for a series on economic development in Clear Lake. The staff won second place for an individual headline. TIPA is the oldest and largest state student press association. Founded in 1909, TIPA is currently based at Texas A&M University-Commerce. "The conference not only gave me the opportunity to network with employers in the communication field, but it also gave me a chance to view other schools' publications," said Amanda Smith, TIPA Conference attendee and current assistant design editor for the UHCLIDIAN. |
