U niversity of Houston-Clear Lake student leaders will attend the 16th Annual Student Leadership Conference at Loyola University New Orleans Feb. 15.

The Loyola University Center for Student Leadership and University Programming Board will host a conference for students from seven different states in the Southern region. The conference focuses on leadership issues and skills.

"The purpose of the conference is to provide an opportunity for emerging student leaders who have a strong interest in becoming more involved on campus, and developing their leadership skills," said Sue Fellman, UH-Clear Lake student government advisor.

The leadership conference showcases a series of speakers called the "Leaders for Life." The speakers consist of several professionals from the New Orleans metropolitan area who have demonstrated leadership in their careers.

The conference will also offer 42 different workshops covering subjects such as ethical decision-making, conflict resolution, stress management, diversity issues in leadership and assertiveness.

"It provides students a structured experience to meet students from other colleges and universities, to network and share ideas and programs that can be brought back to their campuses," said Vicki McNeil, Loyola associate vice president for student affairs.

Discussion sessions and speakers will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 2:45 p.m. with a reception. The keynote speaker for the conference will be Ed Gerety. He is a nationally known motivational speaker whose expertise is in leadership. Gerety will begin his presentation at 9:30 a.m.

This year, students who attend will be able to visit several sights in New Orleans.

"We will have an opportunity to visit the French Quarter, have a nice dinner, maybe enjoy beignets at Cafe DuMonde, take the street car trip through the Garden District to see the beautiful mansions, and just walk around and see as much as we can," Fellman said.

Students can pick up information on the conference and applications in the Student Life Office, Bayou Building, Room 1602. Applications are reviewed by the Student Government Association executive council members, SGA adviser, assistant dean of student life and the dean of students.

The SGA will select 16 students to attend the conference this year.
