State budget cuts hit UH-Clear Lake

University of Houston-Clear Lake President William Staples addressed faculty, staff and students concerning the state-wide budget cuts affecting higher education during a Feb. 6 meeting in the Bayou Theater.

On Jan. 23, Texas Gov. Rick Perry asked state agencies to reduce general revenue spending for the 2003 fiscal year by 7 percent. The 7 percent general revenue reduction translates to a 5 percent state fund reduction for UH-Clear Lake.

Tuition fee increase certain

The University of Houston System has requested a tuition and fee rate change for the 2003-2004 school year. The increase could go up 6 to 7 percent and will be voted on by the Board of Regents sometime this semester.

The current fee for undergraduate resident tuition is $41 per credit hour. The proposal is to raise the tuition anywhere from $42 to $46 per credit hour, as authorized by the state.

McKay receives recognition

Charles W. McKay, dean of the School of Natural and Applied Science and professor of software and computer engineering, was awarded the 2001 ACM SIGAda for "Outstanding Ada Community Contributions" at the ACM SIGAda Annual International Conference.

The international conference was held Dec. 8-12, 2002, at the Holiday Inn on NASA Road 1.
