Male generation lacks respect

Dear Editor,

While skimming through your paper this morning, I stumbled across a very interesting editorial. "Current male generation lacks respect." Hmm, I thought. Is that really so? I myself am a 22-year-old male and I feel that while this is an editorial, I still felt that I needed to reply to this somewhat troubling statement.

I regard this as an opinion, and you know what they say about those. Opinions are like, well you know how the rest of the statement goes.

Respect for women has been long overdue, and I feel that the focus needs to shift past gender and shift towards all races and facets of humanity. Racism still exists in this country today and that affects members of both genders. We need to learn to respect each other.

What is so great about America is that it's a melting pot, a mixture of culture, language and ideals. I do not disagree that women need to be respected, I just think we (as people in general) need to learn and respect everybody.

As far as the father teaching the son respect, that is a tough issue. Some fathers are not fit to be role models; giving birth to a child does not necessarily mean that you have fatherly tendencies. Some people are not fit models.

I have always been taught to respect others, but in my years of life, I have learned that respect is something that you earn as well. I will treat you with respect initially, until you prove to me that you don't deserve to be treated as such.

Enough rambling, not all men are disrespectful, so don't generalize, there are some good ones out there.
