Faculty and staff were honored at the Twenty-fifth Annual Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony April 2 in Atrium II of the Bayou Building.

Honors were awarded for years of service as well as achievement. Three faculty members were awarded the President's Distinguished Faculty Award. Maureen White, associate professor in the School of Education, won the teaching award, Barry Marks of the School of Business and Public Administration won the service award and Jack Lu, researcher in the School of Science and Engineering won the research award.

"I've published 23 papers in peer-reviewed international journals in the last two years," said Lu. "Twenty-five students co-authored the papers with me."

Lu received the research award for his research on metal organic polymers.

Merit award recipients included Linda Bullock, director of Multicultural and International Student Services, Brenda Klimt, supervisor of grounds and horticultural specialist and Irma Ornelas, custodian. Rose Sklar, co-director/registrar of enrollment services won the Hugh P. Avery Distinguished Staff Service Award.

"I came to UHCL as a student and never left," said merit award winner Linda Bullock. "I worked my way up from student to student worker to staff to director."

Additional awards were presented for service history to recipients who have worked in the UH-Clear Lake community for five, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service.

Twenty-five year award recipient Jan Simonds, professor in the School of Human Sciences and Humanities, has many happy memories from years gone by.

"When I was head of the dance program, I walked into my office one day and could barely move because my students had filled it with balloons for my birthday," Simonds said. "There was a lot of camaraderie with my dancers."

Since the dance program's termination in 1991, Simonds has continued to teach dance in the form of classes like Arts and the Child to education majors. Simonds has been the division chair for the Humanities and Fine Arts departments for the last seven years.
