University of Houston-Clear Lake's student publications took top honors at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association's Conference April 3-5 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The UHCLIDIAN brought home five awards, and the Bayousphere six.

TIPA, which is one of the oldest and largest Collegiate Student Press Association in the country, provides students from more than 100 Texas universities and colleges with the opportunity to network with other students planning to enter careers in journalism. The annual convention and competition allows communication students to see how they 'stack up' against their peers.

While at the TIPA Conference, students participated in live competitions and attended workshops and job fairs. At the conclusion of the convention, awards were presented for both the live competitions and for the individual works that were submitted from 2002 in the mail-in competition.

UHCLIDIAN award winners include: Jennifer Glass, first place in copy editing live competition and second place in newspaper design-live competition; Lindsay Tefteller, first place in public relations release writing-live competition; Brian Balboa, honorable mention in television news writing-live competition; and Shirley Wilson, honorable mention in newspaper critical review.

The 2002 edition of Bayousphere, under the direction of Ashley Packard, took honorable mention in the overall literary magazine category. Other Bayousphere awards won include: Linda Lapointe, second place in feature photo; Paula Cook and Jim Lloyd, third place in story package; Elias Martinez, third place in illustration; Cynnamon Coufal, third place in poetry; and Aaron McHone and Jonathan McClure, honorable mention in cover design. Aaron McHone and Jonathan McClure's black and white cover design was recently awarded a national second place award by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

"It was a great networking experience to get together with journalists from other universities in Texas," said Jennifer Glass, design editor of the UHCLIDIAN. "The job fairs and the seminars were very informative. It was an honor to represent UH-Clear Lake."
