MS in School Library and Information Science
With School Librarian Standard Certificate (EC-12)

The graduate plan in School Library and Information Science leads to the master of science degree. Candidates completing this degree plan may also be eligible for certification as School Librarians. Candidates seeking this certification must hold a valid Texas teaching certificate and must be able to verify a minimum of two years successful full-time classroom teaching experience in an approved accredited school. A passing score on the School Librarian State Assessment is required prior to recommendation for this certificate. The plan consists of 39-40 semester hours.

1 If candidates can present verification of one year of experience as a full-time public school or approved accredited private school librarian, three (3) hours of electives with approval of advisor may be substituted for LLLS 6739 (Internship in School Library Practice). To be eligible for internship, completion of 18 hours of the School Librarian core is required.

2 Candidates not passing the School Librarian State Assessment by the final semester of this plan must enroll in and successfully complete this course. Candidates passing this State Assessment by the final semester will have this course waived.

This 27-28 hour certificate is intended for candidates holding a master's degree and planning careers in elementary or secondary school libraries. Candidates planning careers in other library settings should seek special advisement.

To be recommended for the School Librarian certificate:

  • Candidates must complete the above program
  • Hold a valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Verify two years of successful full-time teaching experience in a public or approved accredited private school
  • Hold a master's degree
  • Pass the School Librarian State Assessment
